The V8 generally had the bigger shaft. The Toro Flow I owned was in a single axle truck tractor backed by a 10 speed. Seals, bearings, and gaskets are available for both series. It has closer ratios then the 3 speed or the old truck 4 speed. With their age now, they can also be fairly noisy. Hot Rod John has it correct with the 4 bolt side cover vs the 7 bolt unit. But then we decided to instead see just what the aftermarket and the local parts houses could offer to save the little sucker.

Ray I have to agree with what Hnstray said on the 305 V6. The M-22 was generally installed behind severely powerful high torque big-block engines. Choose one based on its overall condition. The main shaft and main case are interchangeable with the saginaw 3 speed and saginaw 4 speed transmissions. And the 412 highway going through Hardy ar has plenty of steep grades. If it has an overdrive attached to it, then it's a Muncie 319 with a Borg Warner R10 overdrive unit. Every one I was around liked to guzzle gas.

My truck is a daily driver first and foremost. Allows pan removal without removing crossmember. It has been my personal truck for the last year and is registered to me. The underbody may appear questionable; the reason being it that's it's coated with clay as a result of the last terrain it drove on from the previous owner.
Most current conversions involve a more modern overdrive trans such as a 700R4 or 2004R. After some Internet searching, our initial call was to the Mr. One was that if I didn't turn on the solenoid at exactly the right time, the overdrive gear wouldn't engage, and I'd blow out the solenoid fuse. Too heavy to ship economically, but free to good home if somebody wants to come and get it. Pushing the handle in put the transmission into a freewheeling mode where the engine would go down to idle if I lifted my foot off the accelerator when I was driving down the road.
