Built in 1637 at Woolwich Dockyard, this 100-gun ship of the line was christened "HMS Sovereign of the Seas", then renamed "HMS Sovereign", then renamed again "HMS Royal Sovereign". She was the prototype and predecessor of Admiral Horatio Nelson's famous flagship HMS Victory - there are few design differences between the two ships. She was the largest and most heavily armed warship in the world in her day, and served the Royal Navy for over 60 years. In 1696 she caught fire in Portsmouth and burned all the way to the waterline. She never sailed again, but several latter-day British warships have been named Royal Sovereign in her honor. |
